At the beginning of the 90s, houseboats were in demand above all among peculiar individualists. But due to the currently high prices on the real estate market, a new trend towards living on the water has gradually grown. Climate change and rising sea levels are also making floating houses interesting. In the meantime, it is no longer just boats on which people live. Today, water is the new building land for real estate. Living in a “floating home” means freedom, an exclusive lifestyle and a passion for real estate.

Real estates with water situation belong probably to the most popular ones. Man has always been connected to water, just like all life on earth. It calms us down and triggers pleasant feelings. We feel attracted to water. For some it may be enough to have a garden with a pond, for others it attracts us directly to the water. Therefore, it is not surprising that houses on the water are becoming more and more popular. Because here you can live quietly and close to nature. But a house on the water can also be a prestige object.

A “Floating Home” or “Floating House” is not necessarily a houseboat. They do exist, but they are actually houses that float on the water. Unlike houseboats, they do not have a motor. They stand – or swim – more or less near the banks of rivers, lakes, by the sea or in city centres. Even if they cannot drive themselves, they can be moved. They are transported by appropriate boats. If owners of floating houses have to move – for example for professional reasons – the house can be taken with them. Of course, a berth must be available near the new place of residence.

There are floating houses in different sizes. They range from about one floor with 30 square meters to the luxury variant with 265 square meters or more – on several floors. As with the real estate on land, many individual design wishes can be implemented.

But the floating house is not only worthwhile as a home of one’s own. It can also be a good investment. Because “floating houses” are also popular as holiday homes. From there a letting can be worthwhile itself. However, there are additional costs for a houseboat or floating house. In addition to the mooring costs there are operating and maintenance costs. Because the houses are lying in the water, they have to be checked and maintained regularly. In the meantime, however, the first companies are working on the development of self-sufficient floating houses. These supply themselves with climate-friendly water, electricity and heat. So if you are planning to buy a floating house well, it can be a worthwhile investment for you.
